Slept in a bit, 'til 8 something. I didn't get to bed 'til 3:30 am or so - CH work and then reading. Adelaide came in our bed later on, and then I moved to her bed. So once again we were all switched around.

Mary came by 9:45 bearing gifts for us! A blue polka-dot plastic bag for me, great for shopping, toting, etc. A lady in her church makes them. She also brought 2 little bags for the kids, so adorable, from the same lady; and inside a little doll made out of 'flannel' (wash cloth) and a little sachet with lavender inside. Mary also went and got me a vegetable peeler that she mentioned to me on Monday - so thoughtful and quick!

David and Schaeffer set out around 10:30 or so for John Lewis to collect the new buggy! Yeah! Adelaide wanted some "mommy time" and wasn't so big on leaving quickly - so we kind of took our time getting ready, did a puzzle, etc. Good thing, because as we were about halfway down our street, I noticed a lorry (truck) back near our house, knocking at the door and then getting on his cell. SO GLAD I took a leisurely morning and that I turned around, because he was indeed at our house, come to fix the dishwasher! Turns out it was only a nob below the sink that needed to go left instead of up. Ha! Good for him! I asked him a few other questions around the house and thankfully he was very understanding and thorough with me. The British seem to be very thorough, precautionary, and of course energy efficient. Labels on foods remind you to save energy here and there, and even the coffee bag says, "Remember, only boil as much water as you need."

Met David at our agreed spot (will be thankful when we get 2 cell phones, as well as 2 sets of keys!), got crepes for lunch (my favorite spot 3 years ago, so very glad there was still a stand in the same spot! The girl from Hungary was very chatty; the girl from Britain was not) and ate them at the Round Church. Then popped in to meet Annie, I think like the administrative assistant who takes off today for 2 weeks since she's getting married on Monday. Adelaide was interested in the displays and what they said and what the pictures were about - so we talked over dinner about taking her back and reading more about it all. She liked that idea.

I took kids back for naps; David stayed in town since he had a mtg. with Martin and Ian in an hour at 2:30. The new buggy is so wonderful to push! Schaeffer was about asleep when we got home. Adelaide wanted some time to play before rest time. She helped me put the wash on the line to dry (thankfully a little sun today), and then we worked on a puzzle. She told me she missed our house back in Montgomery, and were we ever going to go there again? Would she ever be in her bedroom with her bed again? I responded that I don't know, only God knows, and encouraged her to keep talking because I like knowing what she thinks about all the change lately. She said it's easy and it's hard, it makes her angry and frustrated. I thought that was pretty big for a 4.5 year old to verbalize! She missed her bed and her mirror. It all brought tears to my eyes, for her and just the reality that this is hard in some ways. I was very glad for the time with her.

But then we were on to a tea party, or rather a juice party since we don't have her tea-set yet and I don't have herbal pink (raspberry) tea for her yet. Ti-Ti and Lovie joined us and sat there with their cups at the table. Then she went on to her nap. I rested and started a new book, since I just finished my other novel last night - so sad to end a book! But the one I started today is Susan Schaeffer Macaulay's "For the Children's Sake" and is very interesting!

Schaeffer woke up first, so we had some time outside looking for snails and found a hand shovel in the garden which brought him some digging pleasure. Then Addie up around 4:30. I wanted to take them to a park, but it didn't seem like there is one close-by. We set out about 5:15 for the Botanical Gardens, just a block away. I got a brochure and a form to join for 45 pounds for the 2 of us per year (kids are free); so I'll do that when we have our HSBC debit card. Then decided to let Schaeffer out on our street and walk around our block; he loved running along side! I had seen a little playground yesterday while looking out the back loft windows with Adelaide; so wanted to see if it was somewhere we could go, although I was doubtful since it wasn't marked on the map. We tried 3 entrances on 3 different streets, but no luck.

But coming up the street to Mills Road, who should round the corner just at the same time as us but David! How convenient, esp. because he was heading home and we had the key, and no cell phone to communicate otherwise (or even tape to leave a note on the door!). He took kids home, and I popped into the Co-op for some groceries. Home, dinner, play, clean-up, devotions, read. A later night than hoped for, but down by 9:20. Schaeffer's in the single bed and seemed excited about that, once he realized his paccy was NOT in the cot like he thought and cried about as David was folding it up.

I mopped kitchen floor, which should actually probably be bleached a few times - but at least better than before. Writing, reading and typing now.

Tuesday 23 August

It's already 11, so I'll try to be quick in updating since Saturday:

The kids woke up around 11:30, just as we were about to go to bed, which made that a good nap time for them. It took until about 1 to get them back down. We started with Adelaide in the bed and Schaeffer in the travel cot (pack n play). Then Schaeffer at the other foot of the bed, but A didn't like his feet touching hers. Then A in the cot and S in bed. Then both back in the bed. Then (and finally!) back to start with A in bed, S in cot. David couldn't get back to sleep until 4 something.

Sunday, up around 7:30 or so; beautiful day; breakfast and got ready for church. Left at 9:20 and took about 30 minutes to leisurely walk to Eden Baptist. Friendly congregation, good worship with mix of praise and hymns, kids in for first half then off to creche (nursery) or class. Saw Mary Lown (Martin's wife) at the start, who introduced us to Gordon and his wife (Helen?) - he's on the board for CH. Very friendly, and from Ireland. Kids did well in worship and in their classes; Mary checked in on them and said that Adelaide told the class that her Daddy was here to tell people about God! Oh, and Sally Lloyd-Jones attends Eden! She's the one who wrote "The Jesus Storybook Bible." Finished up around 12 and then visited for a while. I saw a few familiar faces from 3 yrs. ago when we went to the church playgroup "Tiddlywinks" on Tuesdays.

Then walked with Martin to their house, which was nice to be somewhere familiar. Lovely lunch, kids played outside in their beautiful long garden, great to catch up with them and what's been going on more specifically with CH and staff over the last few years. Left with the same towels we had 3 years ago! They had stored them in their loft so we have them back now! And they also let us borrow a double buggy they had in storage for their daughter, which made the walk home easier for Adelaide. It was actually a little warm on the walk home! Such a nice day!

Kids to nap; D and I rested and read a little. Then I started my obsessive cleaning ritual that I always do in a new place, beginning with the kitchen cabinets. They didn't look too bad but did need a good cleaning, and most shelves have needed it 3 times over. I finally finished tonight, Tuesday. David went over to Rob's to carry over the single bed w/ trundle that we are planning to buy from them. On their 2nd trip, they brought Estelle and girls, along with two huge stuffed animals for the kids! They were going to give them to charity, but passed them on to us esp. after Schaeffer had seen them in their garage Saturday and liked them. The girls also made little cards and crafts for the kids - so sweet!

Adelaide definitely was out of sorts Sunday afternoon when the girls woke her up from her nap. It showed especially when the dads were trying to move her iron bed upstairs to the loft - she cried and cried about having to give up her new bed! (Did I mention in the last post that she specifically mentioned how she liked her new bed because it had seashells on it?) I think it's hard on her giving up so much and not having the perspective to know exactly what's going on and for how long. She knows, but not completely.

Anyway, the guys couldn't get her bed out, and couldn't get the single bed frame up - stairs are too narrow and turn too tight. So just took up the trundle and set it up on it's legs. So now there are two single beds in the room, along with the wardrobe and cot. I bought sheet and duvet for Adelaide yesterday (Monday) so washed it today and should hopefully dry by tomorrow so that Schaeffer could begin using the other single. I might eventually like to look for a toddler bed or a trundle bed that would fit under the iron bed already there, just to save some space, especially as I hope to put a check of drawers in there sometime. But for now, I think it will be better for Schaeffer sleeping on a bed than the cot since that's what he's been used to the last 3 weeks.

Ok, so we visited with the Cubitts, Estelle showed me how to use the washer, Rob fixed the kitchen sink so we now have hot water - while the kids played. Then around six, Ilona and Peter Greyling (CH staff; from SA but lived 22 yrs. in Atlanta before selling all and coming here to work with CH in 2008) arrived with 4 pizzas, salad, dressing, and cheesecake. I knew she was going to come by with pizzas for the kids and talk about cell phones with us, but I didn't anticipate this full-fledged meal! It was a treat, and delicious! We talked about which landlines, internet and cell phones to go with, as well as their background and what brought them to CH. We actually went to college with their daughter!

They left around 9; quick baths for kids who were not having the best evening, and down to bed. I went to the store for a quick run, then David took the single bed and frame back to Rob's and took him out for a pint. I think David hammering a few nails in the floorboards down woke up Schaeffer, and he just cried and cried for about an hour! I was hoping, and now think, that Saturday and Sunday were the worst nights for them and that it can only get better from here. Finally got them to bed around 11:20; read a little and to bed.

So now we're to Monday - oh yeah, I woke up around 8 something, made my instant coffee and had a nice peaceful time on the couch with my Bible (or David's actually, since I shipped mine over) and then my journal. I usually don't journal, but my S.S. class gave me one (actually us two) and so I decided to start using it. I think it will be nice to use as an outlet and to record our experience. Then did some cleaning and some dishes, as well as laundry - thankfully another sunny day. I was fighting a little bit of frustration with not being settled yet, but reminded myself we'd only been there a few days and to pace myself! It would be nice to have a rubbish bin for the kitchen though!

By 10:20 I had to hurry to get a shower and get ready so I could get Adelaide up and to the Cubitts by 11. I told her she could bring 1 item, thinking she'd pick Ti-Ti and we'd be off. But she wanted all 3 and cried and cried about it! Come to find out as we talked things through, she thought she was going on a trip and staying over-night. I had told her she was going on a day-trip but I guess that didn't make much sense to her. Situations like this make it challenging because I think she understands, but then it becomes apparent through tears, etc. that her understanding is limited in some aspects.

Saw them off around 11:45 after talking about cultural nuances, like how do I reference adults to my children - Miss and Mr. first name? Mr. and Mrs. last name? or just first name? And "yes, Ma'am" and "No, sir" or ? Turns out most adults prefer for children to just call them their first name, but some like Mr. and Mrs. last name. And ma'am and sir is not used at all; "yes please" and "no thank you" does just fine.

Then David, Schaeffer and I set out to John Lewis to meet Mary there in the buggy section. Ordered a Phil and Ted's Explorer to be in store on Wednesday - so excited! David took Schaeffer on to look at other things while Mary and I looked around the home-goods floor. It's more or less like Dillard's; very nice, where you register when you're getting married, but wouldn't supply a house for us now on our budget.

We didn't get anything and decided to go out to Sainsbury's, which is a grocery store/household store maybe between Wal-Mart and Target level. So funny, my brain is on such overload that I can't remember what we call certain items! Such as, when we arrived there I asked Mary what they call "this" (as I picked out a shopping cart). She said, "A trolley. What do you call it?" And can you believe I couldn't even remember?! That's happened a few other times! Anyway, we had a very successful trip (ironing board, cutlery, ktn. timer, toaster, tp and paper towels or kitchen paper, mop, broom, cleaners, mixing bowl, some pans, coffee press, compost bin and liners, etc), and I even managed to save 10 pounds (about $16.50) by buying things on sale. The cashier said, "Looks like we're getting someone off to Uni, eh?" which it did, and I guess is a compliment, but honestly, do I really look 18 still?! Oh, and my credit card wouldn't work for some strange reason because it worked on Friday, but thankfully I was shopping with Mary and she didn't mind paying for it and I'll pay her back later on. Loaded all in her car, and then to Home Sense, which was the first store Elaine took me to on Friday at the BeeHive. Bought a few things there (kitchen towels, dish drainer, cutlery holder, outdoor broom, single fitted sheet and duvet cover) and then she drove me back home around 4. So helpful to go with someone, and with a car! I am glad I am not trying to get around Cambridge with a car, at least not yet. I don't think my brain could handle it. Even though the language is relatively the same, there are so many changes and so many things to learn!

Made lasagnas and green beans that Estelle had supplied for us, which was so nice and convenient and very delicious. Funny though, at this stage, what getting an easy dinner like that entails - taking the tags off the pan I bought today to put the lasagnas on, figuring out how to turn the oven on and how to open it (hinges on left side rather than at bottom), reading directions for lasagna and dealing with Celcius, taking off tags and washing the new colander so I can wash green beans, washing pot to cook green beans in, etc. etc. It is kind of nice to set up all new again, although I do feel it's a waste somewhat with all our things just sitting in storage. But this is what we must do now, and we're not the first ones to have done all of this, and we have a tremendous amount of help! I have no idea how immigrants do this if they don't know anyone and don't have a way to get around! Oh, my accent color in the kitchen is red! I wouldn't have thought that, but it's working - and I bought 3 different patterned-red mugs at Sainsbury's to add to the red coffee-press, red colander, red cutting board, knife, oven mits, and now kitchen towels. Maybe I'll get some red geraniums to put in a window box outside the kitchen which overlooks the sink (which I'm at a lot because we still haven't figured out how to get the dishwasher going!)

Ok, this is so long, I'll try to wrap up. Let's see, so then Estelle and girls brought Adelaide over, with Estelle carrying her. She said they had a lovely day and Adelaide was well behaved. When the kids ran up to the loft to play, she told David and I that when they got home, Adelaide started crying because she didn't want to leave. That kind of seemed typical for Adelaide, but then Estelle said that Adelaide said, "I'll never get to see you again! I'm going away!" So the tears and outburst must have been more because of the changes that we've had over the last 6-7 weeks, and she doesn't know if we're staying here or just here for a few weeks and then moving on, which would make sense that she'd think that since that's exactly what we've been doing since the end of June! Thankfully Estelle is such a patient, understanding mother who has been through an international move herself.

Devotions after dinner and then off to bed at a reasonable time if I can remember correctly. And I am pretty sure that they slept through the night! It was nice to have an evening just us at home; really our first! I think we all needed that time.

Tuesday, this morning, David or the kids woke up at 6:30 or 7 - a little too early for me this morning, but oh well. David found VeggieTales on YouTube for the kids to watch while I did dishes and started breakfast. Then our internet little deal went out; we used all the power or whatever from it already, which skype, facetime and YouTube all take more power from it. So we need to top that up, but we're down to 30 pounds cash, and VISA isn't working for us. David was a little out of sorts this morning about the whole money/bank/phone situation.

Went to HSBC bank around the corner for our 9:30 appointment to set up a bank. Kids did ok, the banker was very understanding and brought out paper and highlighters for them. YEAH, we set up an account! I left David to get the tutorial on banking online and took kids by our house to get rain coats on our way to Heritage School. It was a pretty dismal, drizzly, cold day - we better get used to it! But when we got to the house, I couldn't figure out how to open up the door! I had never done it before and it was not obvious to me. So we raced back to the bank and thankfully David was still there. So he walked us home and I had my lesson in opening our door.

David left to go to JSM Properties to discuss various issues with the house, then to the City Centre to look into cell phone options, to the Round Church, and to 3M or whatever it is to top up our internet little deal. I took kids to Heritage School, and thankfully Catriona was there. She had said she would be just for a few hours today. We've been emailing each other all summer so it was great to put a face with her name. While the school was obviously being worked on and painted and in no shape for a tour, we were able to step inside to Adelaide's classroom - lots of space, lots of windows, etc. Schaeffer instantly found the train set and had a hard time saying good-bye to that. We chatted for a bit and then went on home.

Thankful for Elaine's yummy Santa Fe soup in the fridge; heated that up along with cheese toast. More and more dishes to do! Kids to nap around 1:30 after two stories - nice to be having a 'normal' day, eating with my kids at our table, reading to them before naps at a reasonable time. I laid down as well and instantly must have fallen asleep; woke up 40 min. later to David knocking at the door. (We only have 1 set; hopefully will get another but bank and phone are higher priority right now.) Just as well; talked with him, thankful that he had a successful trip and felt like he was taking care of some things and making progress. Oh, and Annie (CH staff) invited us to her wedding this next Monday! Adelaide and I plan to go - I'm really excited to be able to go and be a part of this celebration for her, and also to see how an English wedding is done. Hopefully the kids and I can meet her tomorrow morning at the Round Church.

More cleaning of the kitchen cabinets; kids woke rather early and played with David. Then the boys left to go to a vacuum store that Mary had told me about (we're hoping a good cleaning of the carpets will help our allergies!), and to a new second-hand store that opened today to look for things like dressers, table and chairs, lamps, clocks, and maybe even a tumble dry. Adelaide and I had a great time doing puzzles, playing, and coloring.

Boys got home with a new vacuum! David was so excited; it's a refurbished one, but Dyson I believe, so good quality. He instantly went to work in the living room and collected a disgustingly large amount from just the rug and the couch there. Into the rubbish bin!

Dinner tonight was leftovers from Saturday night's BBQ, salad from Sunday night and cooked carrots. SO NICE I really haven't had to think about a big run to the store for groceries. They supplied us well. Even the gas company sent us a 'new home' box with tp, kitchen paper, tea and sugar (of course!) and shelf milk.

Baths, devotions and bed - I like feeling normal again! Hopefully the kids will as well! Then Martin stopped by with a table in his car that they had up in their loft! So we quickly unloaded it since all the parking spaces were taken; Adelaide came down to say hello. The table is bigger than the one the Cubitts have loaned to us (from their landlord), we believe from Ikea. David quickly got that set up.

Martin said Mary has some other things for me and will be by in the morning - I know she offered some glasses. Then I'd like to take kids to the Round Church to meet Annie, if she's not too busy tomorrow as it's her last day working before she takes off for 2 weeks for wedding. Maybe we'll stop by the library and check that out, or stop by Parkside Pools and see what the schedule there is. David has a meeting at the Round Church with Martin and some of the other guys at 2:30 so I'll definitely be home in the afternoon.

Ilona called tonight to check in on us and invite me to join her and some other ladies for lunch on Thursday at 1. It's nice I can do this right now since David doesn't officially start until next week! Then after lunch she'll take me shopping and drive me back home in her car. Thursday night we're going to the Cubitt's home group at their house for dinner and Bible Study (a Derek Thomas book on Galatians). They go to Cambridge Pres. (CPC).

Friday the kids and I are going to try to make it to Grantchester Park with some other moms and kids starting in Adelaide's class, I believe. I'm not sure how we'll make it - need to check a map to see if we can walk there or better to take a bus or taxi.

We are here!

We made it just fine and have really had a great time so far settling in.

Wednesday afternoon, we left Beaumont with all of my family there to see us off - sister Lauren and Joshua with their 2 kids, sister Krista with her 5 kids, my parents, all 3 grandparents, my Aunt Libby and her son Sam from in town, and then even my Aunt Pam from Columbus, GA and my Aunt Danna and her family of 4 from Bertram, TX. They woke up Wednesday and decided to come to Beaumont, a five hour drive one-way, to see us off and the rest of the family since so many were in town! That was a sweet send-off!

My parents took us to Houston. We had dinner at Pappasito's, THE BEST Mexican restaurant ever, and then they dropped us off at the Ramada. NEVER STAY AT THE RAMADA BY BUSH INTERCONTINENTAL AIRPORT! Absolutely awful - 2 roaches in the room, really run-down, and our plans to swim Thursday morning were dashed when we went out and found the pool green. So we got a full refund, went to the mall, walked around and had lunch - our last meal in the states - at Chick-Fil-A. Adelaide was happy! Back to hotel for an hour nap (really only Schaeffer) and then off to the airport. It was great flying through Houston - it only took 30 minutes for us to leave the hotel on the shuttle, arrive at the airport and go through security.

The flight wasn't too bad. We took off around 4:30 pm and arrived at Heathrow around 7:30 am (but with the six hour time change, it was 1:30 am for us). Adelaide fell asleep soon after taking off, which surprised us. We enjoyed the sticker books, coloring books, reading books, crayons, magnetic dolls, etc. that were given as gifts to the children for the trip - thank you all! Adelaide liked the bathroom!!! The kids slept more later on, maybe for 4-5 hours; David slept a few hours but I was really only able to rest. (I suppose that all-nighter I pulled when packing up our house helped to prepare me for this!)

Made it through customs (with a very silly little boy who had way too much energy to be in line for forever!), exchanged money (don't bring coins; they don't exchange and you'll just be stuck with lots of U.S. change you can't use!), collected bags (they all made it!) and went to the bus station. There was one scheduled to leave at 8:45 and as it was 8:40, we quickly bought tickets and went outside. It was late; so thankfully I had time to run back inside for waters and food. The kids and I slept on the 3 hour trip to Cambridge; I don't think David did.

Martin Lown (administrator for Christian Heritage) and Ian and Elaine Cooper (I believe a tutor for CH) were there to greet us with warm hugs and helping hands, as well as a car to carry us & bags to our new house. Which by the way, the address is:

It was pretty much as we expected from the pictures (which, by the way, if you did not receive the email we sent out with the pictures and would like it, please email us and we can do so). I think it will work really well. It has an open floor plan, so the living/dining/kitchen are all easily accessible rather than being off of a hallway. 2 bedrooms and bath are on second floor (or 1st floor here) and there's even a loft upstairs on the 3rd floor - barely able to stand straight up, but will work for a little area for kids to play, us to stay when guests are here and staying in our bedrooms, and for storing off-season clothing, etc.

Rob and Estelle Cubitt, who helped us find the house, were so kind and thoughtful to let us borrow and put in 2 living room chairs, a table and 4 chairs in the dining room, toys for the kids, linens on the beds, towels in the bath, as well as some kitchen essentials (cutlery, dishes, glasses, a pot) and groceries and household goods. Elaine Cooper also had provided a basket full of lovely foods, soup in the fridge, fresh flowers and cake, etc. It really helped to come in to such a cheery situation - it would have been a little bleak otherwise.

Ian and Martin helped to bring in our bags and sort out the water heater, etc. They quickly realized we didn't have a kettle, and said that was an absolute must. Ian left and Martin stayed for a bit talking about plans, etc. By the time Martin was ready to leave, Elaine arrived with a brand-new stainless steel kettle from John Lewis Department Store! It cracked me up that within 30 minutes of arriving in our new house, they provide us with a kettle! It has been very handy to make tea and instant coffee. And as it seems that I'll go with a coffee press rather than a coffee maker, then the kettle will also be very useful then.

We had a few hours to settle in - the kids were happy to play with the toys Estelle was kind enough to lend us. Adelaide said, "I love this house! I love Cambridge!" and when in her bedroom, "Look, Mommy! My bed has sea-shells!" which sure enough there were little ones on the rod-iron spindles. We're still figuring out the hot water (so I had a cold shower!) as well as the dishwasher, and need to get rubbish bins, etc. (they have 3 here - regular trash, recycling, and compost).

Then Elaine Cooper picked me up at 3:30 and we shopped for 3 hours! It was SO WONDERFUL having her help, because I really was a little concerned as to how I would go about furnishing our new home. I don't know where to go, I don't have a car for transporting big boxes, and I really don't know what's a good deal and what's too much. She was the perfect person to go shopping with - she gave her insight and opinion but let the decision rest on me, and was very understanding of my questions and sometimes me being overwhelmed. We went to three stores and got quite a bit done.

David had the kids fed and bathed when I returned home, and Martin had brought over a temporary cell phone with all the contacts that we will need for the time being. Kids to bed; we stayed up settling in more and talking about plans for setting up a bank, setting up internet, phones, contacting the City Council, getting a stroller, etc. Then to bed (which is rather uncomfortable, actually the most uncomfortable bed I think I have ever slept on - you feel each and every spring! ha!) until 2 am when the kids woke up hungry and wanting a snack. So we obliged, considering it was technically dinner time for them. Back to bed.

We didn't wake until after noon! So there went our morning plans, but we settled in more and then got ready. 4 pm to Cubitts for a BBQ with other families whose children are enrolled with Heritage School (which is where Adelaide will be going). It was really great to meet so many families and their children - I think there were five families there (or actually here, since I'm back with my computer using their internet tonight!). Adelaide quickly made friends with their two girls, Amy and Emily. I think I'll be starting a little playgroup for Heritage School moms who still have a little one at home. I think we'll buy a bed with trundle bed off of them, and they'll lend us their microwave. Everyone there was either American (one other family besides us) or South African - which we learned there are 2 kinds of whites from South African: English South Africans and African South Africans who speak Afrikaanse, similar to Dutch, very fun to listen to.

Anyway, lots of good conversations, very helpful to meet people right off the bat, etc. Went home with loads of food, as well as a rubbish bin.

Tomorrow is church at Eden Baptist and then lunch at Martin and Mary Lown's. Ilona Greyling will come by after she finishes her day working at the Round Church (CH) with pizzas and to help us sort out cell phones. Monday, Adelaide has been asked to join Estelle Cubitt and her girls and mother for a day-trip to, honestly, I don't remember where, but she's very excited about it.

That's all for now - it's 10:30 so I better go back home and try to get some sleep soon. I think so far I've managed to not say 'pants' so that's success in my eyes! (that means underwear here)
