Last week of Easter Break

Monday - I went into town to get the tire (tyre) fixed on the trailer and hopefully get my kickstand fixed - but that didn't happen. The tire did, so that's more important. Also got to go to RC to play piano for a few hours, which was nice but also frustrating to realize how much 'dusting off' these old pieces of mine need that I used to be able to play with no problem at all. Maybe one day I'll have a piano and have time to practice on a regular basis! I also cycled down to Scotsdale's Garden Center for more pots for the plants. That night David went out with a friend while his family was OOT. 

Tuesday - went to Zoology Museum with a classmate from school and his family - Australians. Hardly anyone was there since it was during the week and all state schools have gone back already. 

Kids and I to Adventurers/Sainsbury's that evening. I bought too many groceries to bring home, especially with two kids. Very top-heavy bike, but Schaeffer liked riding on the back and did well with it. I had to have Adelaide get out and walk over the bridge that goes over the RR b/c there was no way I could cycle over it, and I would have exhausted myself trying to push everything/everyone over the hill. Ah, live and learn - next time I'll go to the store by myself or do an order. 

Wednesday - Into town with kids; Schaeffer fell asleep. Angeline over that night for spaghetti dinner; then I took her out that evening for drinks and dessert/pudding.

Thursday - Parkside pool with South African friend and her kids, another classmate of Adelaide's. Good swimming from both of mine; big improvement! David had Life in the Round that night.

Friday - To Scotsdales with another classmate and her mom. Nice to get a lift, with 3 bags of soil to be brought home! Baked that afternoon for David to take bars with him to the Youth get-together that he was speaking at that evening, on apologetics. He had to figure out the bus to get out there; it was where I go for Bible study on Thursdays.

Saturday - Wimpole with American friends from church. We joined zipcar on Friday so we could take a car today, since there's not a bus or train near Wimpole. Zipcar was really easy to use, so that was nice. Not as easy as a car outside your door, but they make it easy to make reservations, get into the car, fill up with gas, directions, etc.

Adelaide and I went to piano/viola concert that evening at the Round Church performed by one of the apprentices (Pui) and his girlfriend raising funds for her medical missions trip to Uganda. Really nice concert, and just the right amount of time for a little girl. It hailed (big!) just as we were loading up to leave!

Sunday, 22nd - Church in the morning. Church at night, David preached. He walked, I rode with the kids (and made it up Castle Hill! No flat tire this week!). Very rainy - more hail! Very surprised that I even heard thunder, which I believe is the first time since being here.

It's fun to think about all the international friendships we have here. Just this week, I've gotten together with Australian, South African and English friends from school. Another school mom from The Netherlands stopped by for sunflower seedings on Thursday. I was emailing our neighbors from Iceland about coming over. I wrote our next door Persian neighbor a thank you note for the Easter chocolates she gave us. We went to the concert by our Hong Kong apprentice and girlfriend, and there saw another apprentice from Norway/Japan. I stopped to chat with our neighbor from India/US. It's nice to feel closer to the heartbeat of the world and a reminder that the world is a big place with many different types of people in it!

Stay-cation

April 9-13 was a week off of work for David and the apprentices. With him gone the week before in Wales, we just decided to stay here and rest a little, as well as get together with friends and take a day trip or two.

Monday (Apr. 9) was a rainy day, so perfect for staying home. Got a little weeding done (our garden is so small it only takes about 30 minutes to spruce it up a bit!) before the rains came. We were going to go to a Welly Wanging tournament at a pub in Barton, but we didn't end up going because we'd have been cycling miles in the rain. BTW, welly wanging is a competition to see who can throw a welly (rain boot) the farthest.

Tuesday we caught the bus out to our South African friends' home in a nearby village and had a great time with them all day - the kids played really well together, and we enjoyed the time talking and grilling out (having a BBQ). When we were walking home from the bus-stop, it started hailing on us! 

On Wednesday (Apr. 11) we decided to go to Anglesey Abbey. Addie and I went four summers ago and had a great time, but that was in July. It was still very nice this time, just to be out in a pretty place with lots of open space for the kids to run around and explore, dig with sticks, etc.

On Thursday we went over to our American friend's house, on the north side of town. So this time I made it up Castle Hill - small victory! Had a little time at the park before the rain came; then to their house for a play and packed lunch. That evening, David and I went to dinner at the Carter's house. David's gotten to know Andrew because Andrew is a pastor in a nearby village and has given some of the lectures at the Round Church to the interns. We took the train down to Royston and then Andrew picked us up and drove us to their home, up on a hill/plateau with a really nice view. We had a great time visiting with them and getting to know them better; a very like-minded couple with regards to theology, family, life, culture, etc. 

Friday (Apr. 13) morning we had a school mate over, as well as her Mommy. It's really nice to chat with people and pick up new tips or things going on in Cambridge. I got to go to the store myself that afternoon - the trailer is very convenient for grocery store trips! That evening, Angeline and Jon came over for pizza and a movie, and Jon stayed with the kids while David and I went to another Carter's for dinner! This couple we know from Adelaide's school; I've gotten to know the mom pretty well and really enjoy her, so this was a great opportunity to get to know them better, especially her husband. Very intellectually stimulating dinner conversation! 

Jon ended up staying over Friday night so we made a big breakfast with egg burritos. The Gobbitts came over 1-6ish. He is a pastor at a local church and David's really hit it off with him. We went over to their house for Sunday lunch back in December, so it was good to get the families together again. We went to the Gardens and then back here for a pasta bake dinner I had made that morning. Soon after they left, the Carters (Thursday night friends) called and asked if they could swing by. Their 4 and our 2 kids had a great time playing together while we caught up. 

Sunday, Apr. 15 was church in the morning, and then that afternoon our church was hosting a tea (dinner) at 4:30 for a group of Spring Breakers from Tacoma, Washington. I made some food for that, and loaded the kids up in the trailer. David went earlier to walk. This time I couldn't make it up Castle Hill - and come to find out, a wheel on the trailer was completely flat! Thankfully David was just a little ways away and came to help us get to church. Afterwards, we all walked back into town; the kids and I were going to catch a bus, but Sunday evenings they are few and far between. Rather than wait 20 minutes for the next one, we called a taxi which I really didn't want to do ($) but the kids LOVED!

Holy Week

Adelaide has had three weeks off of school - Easter Break - between 2nd and 3rd term. It's been nice - a little more time to sleep in, stay in pajamas, days out or with friends, etc. Here's week 1:

Palm Sunday - I missed Trinity Church today; really this whole week. I missed the music really. I missed my piano, an easy way for me to express myself, especially through hymns during this Holy Week. I compensated by listening to the Messiah all week. I dressed the kids up Southern Style (smocked dress, big bow; shortalls - we DID wear shoes however) for the church service and smiled to myself. After church, the kids and I went to the grocery store in town and then to the Market, which was fun with them. Schaeffer picked out some olives (the guy asked me if I was from Canada! pretty much couldn't be more opposite of the truth!), Addie picked out some bread, and both had ice cream cones which were big treats. I managed to get Schaeffer down for a nap and make mac n cheese for them (from scratch, as there are no handy Kraft boxes around here; this one turned out better than my first try a few months ago) before gobbling it down and racing off to church. We usually don't go to night church because it's too far to walk with the kids, and the buses don't run frequently Sunday night, and it's just a tricky time with dinner and bedtime. But since David's OOT and I can get there by bike now, we went for it. I couldn't make it up Castle Hill, and was a tad late getting into the service after locking up everything, helmets off, snaps off and on, etc. But glad we went for it. Very thankful for a doctrinally-sound church where we don't have to question what's been said or go home and de-brief. And very thankful for Addie's school. Having such a good church and school is a huge blessing and not something that most cities in England have. Afterwards, had to hurry home as it was getting dark and I didn't have lights (I think I accidently left them on my bike the first day I bought them, and they were snatched!). I'm much more confident on the main roads and intersections now, and am thankful for getting around easier and faster - although my muscles are having to catch up!

Monday (Apr. 2) morning was more spring cleaning. Then at noon, we had some relatives of a neighbor back home in Montgomery stop by. They're visiting Cambridge University, looking into a program here, so stopped by for a chat and a cup of tea before walking into town. Then the kids and I cycled down to Scotsdale's Garden Center after naps. It's a good distance, especially with two kids, ESPECIALLY with a big bag of soil to haul home as well. Whew! But this is all for my little lupin and sunflower seeds, as well as a free strawberry plant. I'm not at all a green thumb in the garden, but with such a little garden that needs a little more color, it's not as intimidating to me as a big yard. So here goes...

Tuesday to Thursday, Adelaide went to a Holiday Club (like VBS) at a local church. Five other classmates of hers went as well. She had a great time - she said yesterday it was one of the highlights of her Easter Break. So we had that every morning. I was thankful for being able to walk somewhere, after biking Sunday and Monday. While she was there: Tuesday morning Schaeffer and I came home to do some gardening. Wednesday we went to the playground (but too cold and rainy) and shops with a good friend. Thursday we went to the BeeHive (shopping area) and Tesco (grocery store). Tuesday afternoon, Elaine Cooper came over for a cup of tea and a chat which was very nice and encouraging. Wednesday afternoon on the way home from Holiday Club we came across this "Bubble walk on Water" which Adelaide really wanted to try, and surprisingly enough to me didn't get scared but really enjoyed it!

 After naps, we went over to the Cubitts and ended up joining them for dinner. The kids LOVE going over there and playing with their girls and jumping on their trampoline, and I enjoy visiting very much with Estelle and Rob. Thursday night we went to the BBQ at Christ's Church to wrap up the Holiday Club.

 

Chaos and cold but nice to see what she's been doing all week. Schaeffer's been singing the theme song for weeks later! David got back in town and met us there - we were all very happy to see Daddy! He had a great time at the conference, although he'd never been so cold in his life.

Friday morning, Good Friday, we went to the morning service at our church. Jon came home with us for some minestrone soup; and surprisingly my kids LOVED the soup! Always nice to have a winner. I did some errands by myself that afternoon, which I must say was quite nice after being a single parent for 6 days. I looked at five stores this week for a 3x3 frame to put the little lamb picture I cross-stitched for the kids for Easter; and at last found at John Lewis (nice dept. store). Ah, love John Lewis, just not the prices. But they will have just about whatever is it you're looking for! Got new lights for my bike. The Sainsbury's in town didn't have leg of lamb, so I had to go to the Sainsbury's out at Coldham's Lane on Saturday for it, since it's 1/2 price. I've never cooked leg of lamb before, so a little nervous, esp. since we're having company over for Easter Lunch as well, and we don't normally have company over for Sunday lunch (read below). I'm also doing a new recipe with carrots and parsnips, as well as a new recipe for cheesecake. On Saturday, David took the kids to the Gardens while I rode out to Sainsbury's, with the trailer. Adelaide got to pet a duckling and she was SO excited and has been a duck ever since. That afternoon, we made little lamb cupcakes!

Sunday, Easter Sunday - leg of lamb in the oven just before church, planning to jump on my bike and race into town, but ALAS I can't manage in the dress I'm wearing! If I walk, I'll be late which I hate to be late to church, esp. Easter Sunday, and hate not to be there for D with the kids. So, just bit the bullet and called a taxi, and thankfully made it perfectly in time. Pui and Natasha (girlfriend) and Jan joined us for lunch, which was an hour late getting on to the table (we need to talk to this slow cook of ours!). Thankfully, the lamb and everything else turned out and we had a very nice visit with everyone. Jan stayed most of the afternoon before heading to the evening service which was nice to visit with him one-on-one. Usually Sunday lunch is so tricky we don't have anyone over - kids are hungry and tired right after church. But it worked, so that's good to know that maybe at this stage in life it's manageable, at least more than it was a year or two ago.

I'm going to try to write more frequently, so that when I do write it's not forever long!

Since the last update:

Saturday, March 24th was the day I took Adelaide to the church's kids event that morning. Schaeffer and I went into town to get the kickstand fixed on my bike (which was not a success, and still isn't fixed). The kids and I ended the day with a trip to Lammas Land for some play since it was so nice. David went to London for the soccer (football) game and had a great time!

Sunday March 25th - church in the morning. It's great when the kids can ride to church on their scooter and balance bike - then they're worn out and ready to sit in church for 1.5 hours! We had our neighbors over for tea and cakes later that day, and enjoyed getting to know them better. The kids enjoyed playing with their little boy.

Monday March 26th - Thankful I am at a point to be more involved with Adelaide's school. I met with a few other moms to help plan the school's upcoming Bike-A-Thon to raise funds for a new bike shed. I cycled up there for the meeting and then shopped at Sainsbury's; I have to keep my shop to a minimum when I'm on the bike and only get what can fit in the basket and my backpack, which makes me a little top-heavy. The Alabama Boys arrived in time for a later dinner of Beef Pie, and Sticky Toffee Pudding with custard for dessert. I went out with a few moms from school that evening which was really nice to get out and chat! I came back to six guys out in our little garden patio area having a great time visiting; I joined them for a while before the pile of dishes began calling my name.

Tuesday, March 27th we made a full English Breakfast, complete with baked beans and grilled tomatoes and mushrooms.

I wanted to cook as much British food for these boys as possible, and figured I couldn't cook enough for three 18 year old boys! The kids and I met the boys and David at the Botanic Gardens later in the afternoon for a run-around quickly before it closed.

That evening we had Bangers and Mash. Come to think of it, most of my time during their visit consisted of buying groceries, bringing them home, and cooking them!

Wednesday, March 28th - Slow morning for us all; staying up too late chatting! It's encouraging for David to see his former students and catch up with them and see where they are in life. The kids LOVED playing with them, and made many memories that way. I'm thankful that our children have a built-in way of being around older people on a consistent basis and seeing lots of people in and out of our home. Pasta Bake for dinner, and then David and the guys went out to meet up with some of David's friends.

Thursday, March 29 -

The guys headed out to catch their train, and Schaeffer and I headed to the church bible study. Addie to Dr. that afternoon; David had Life in the Round, and afterwards he and Angeline came home so that she could sit while he and I went to our Home Group.

Friday, March 30 - pretty low-key day, nice to have some time to get the house back in a little order and just be the 4 of us after lots of company this month. Pizza and movie night! Oh, Schaeffer and I walked out to Homebase (I had to give my legs a break from the bike!) and bought some soil and seeds to plant - Lupin and Sunflower.

Saturday, March 31st - David left early for the New Word Alive conference in Wales. It's just the kids and I for six days! Adelaide's on Easter holiday for three weeks!!! Looking forward to doing some things in and around Cambridge, getting together with friends, and also just having some down-time at home, hopefully.

Our daffodils all came up this week! We kept track of the new blooms each day with a tally chart and number sentences to get the total number of blooms each day. 

March 2012

Spring is here! It's been so nice lately. Really the winter wasn't all that bad except a few weeks where it was really cold. But it is really nice to have nice weather where you don't have to find everyone's hat, scarf, and gloves before heading out the door.

I feel like I'm catching up with life lately, which is great. There's still some things to get for the house, but it's all things we can live without until I see a good deal. Now I'm able to focus more on the interns and keeping up with what's going on with them, and being more involved with school and church.

Thursday March 1st was World Book Day and students could dress up as their favorite character. Adelaide was Clara from the Nutcracker.

Later that night we had interns over for dinner before they had the ARCU Apologetics Seminar that night. It was a little chaotic, mostly for me I imagine, getting dinner ready, taking care of kids and managing kids while trying to talk to the interns. I decided I just need to lower expectations when kids are eating with us, and have some later dinners once they go to bed so we can have an adult dinner around the table together.

Friday March 2nd, Angeline (intern) offered to babysit for us; so we went to see a movie and dinner out at the Mill Pond which was really nice - our table was right beside the old mill.

Saturday, March 3rd: I went out to ride bikes by myself, and decided on a Dawes Geneva (7 speed hub gear) at a 2nd hand shop. I had tried it before, but it wasn't comfortable. After riding it and taking it by another repair shop to see if I could get a child's seat put on it, they saw the problem and fixed the seat and handlebars for me. After that it was much better, so I finally made a decision and bought it! He was going to add mudguards, chain guard, kick stand and basket to it, and check on 3rd gear because it was catching on me when I rode it. So I couldn't take it home that day, but SUPER excited to be getting a bike!

We had a couple from church over for dinner that night, at 7:30 after kids were in bed at 7:20. That worked really well to have a later dinner, although we didn't finish until after 10! It's good to be able to get to know people better and feel like we have time to visit for an evening.

Sunday, March 4th a neighbor couple had us over for tea and cakes in the afternoon. They have a little baby so the kids had a great time playing with all his baby toys! So far that's the 5th neighbor we've gotten to know.

All that week, March 5-9, David had ARCU Mission Week (Anglia Ruskin Christian Union) so was gone most of Monday and most every night. He and the interns were really encouraged by the interest the CU's have taken to them, and how much more confident they (interns) are with communicating their beliefs.

I picked up my bike on Wednesday, the 7th with both kids. David had taken the trailer up to the bike shop on Tuesday morning to have the mechanic take a look at it and make sure it would fit onto the bike. The kids and I walked into town with our helmets, and then I rode the bike home with the kids in the trailer, all for the first time. VERY nervous but I did it, and managed to navigate a double round-a-bout. 3rd gear still catching, and no kick stand though, so will have to go back.

Thursday, March 8th Ranald offered to babysit for me so I could go to the Life in the Round lecture on Art and the Passion. It was nice to have intellectual stimulation for an hour!

Saturday, March 10th was busy! I had bike lessons that morning for over 2 hours, which was costly but I think worth it to help me know what to do and give me experience and confidence. I think I would have eventually gotten there on my own, but I'm that much farther ahead and can tackle most intersections now.

From 2-4 Adelaide had a birthday party; most parents drop off so I had 1.5 hours to myself in town! I needed a little rest after all that biking earlier on - 9.2 miles and legs feeling it!

Then another mom and 4 kids between us both walked to the school's family fundraising dinner near our home (actually it was where Adelaide's party was, just upstairs in the bigger area). It was a Ceiledh, I think a Scottish dance/dinner party so they had a band and a caller - lots of fun dancing with everyone!

Jon (intern from Alabama) had two friends stopping in England for 2 days before going to Paris, so they stayed with us. Jon and Meredith were at our home when we got back from the dinner, so we had a good time visiting with them that evening after the kids went to bed. Megan, the other friend, got in later that night.

Monday, March 12th Adelaide's class shared in Assembly, with Mother's Day as the theme. It's March 18th over here instead of May. They recited a poem and then showed pictures of their mom and each one told something special about their mom. Adelaide did really well - not shy at all!

I took her to the dentist that afternoon; very different over here. You see the dentist who just gives a quick overview but not a cleaning. If he thinks you need a cleaning, then he writes you a prescription to see the dental hygienist. And no toothbrush and travel toothpaste kit in a little bag for you at the end. All of this is free for kids, but not at all for adults. It made me miss our dentists back home a little! Just have to get my mind around a new way of doing things.

Had two lunch meetings that week with Chairman of the Board to hash out money situations, taxes, reimbursements, etc. etc. It's very incredible how much time he's spent in getting us (and keeping us) over here.

Pui (intern from Hong Kong) had a friend from London coming to Cambridge for a medical seminar who needed a place to stay. So she stayed with us Wednesday March 14 - Friday March 16. Phoebe was a delight to have, very sweet and easy to be around. The kids love having company here!

Wednesday was my birthday; David made me a very nice breakfast of bacon/egg croissant - my favorite. While I made dinner, the kids made me a special birthday cake.

In the late afternoon the kids and I met David in town after work and we walked by the Mill Pond (picture below) and the Backs - behind the colleges, which is beautiful this time of year with crocus and daffodils blooming, and this time of day with the sun setting and shining on these beautiful buildings.

Thursday I picked up my bike (took it in Monday to have gears fixed and kick stand added), pulling Schaeffer in the trailer all the way into town. It would be handy to have those new trailers that can turn into a buggy, but hopefully this won't happen too often. He, of course, fell asleep on the way. 3rd gear, and now 4th, STILL aren't working, and no kick stand either.

Friday night (16th) Christian Heritage hosted a jazz band from the States on tour for "Heaven in a Night Club: The Spiritual Roots of Jazz." I got to go and even went early to help with tickets! It was nice to feel a part of Christian Heritage in a small way like this. It was well attended and a great evening!

Saturday, the 17th, we borrowed the Townsend's (Chairman of Board) family car. He offered a few weeks back and so we took him up on his great offer as a way to celebrate my birthday, Mother's Day and, why not, St. Patrick's Day! We went to some small, medieval wool villages about an hour SE of here in Suffolk. Had a great time in the car together seeing the area in which we live - Schaeffer said, "I see England!" Amazed at all the old old old timber-framed buildings.

Pictures don't quite do it justice. I'm sure there's a dozen or so puzzles that have been made with photographs of Lavenham! The pub we ate lunch in was built in 1360. The Guildhall in one village (Lavenham) had a display on the wool trade, which made these little villages very wealthy back in the day. Since then, we've all been pretending to be making cloth - shearing the sheep, combing the wool, spinning the thread, and weaving at the loom. It's fun to see the impact this made on the kids - or rather, on Adelaide who gives us all our roles for the current drama selection!

Sunday, the 18th was Mothering Sunday here. Angeline and her Mom came over for tea and cakes that afternoon - great to have time with them!

Monday, the 19th I took my bike in again for the 2nd time to get gears fixed and kick stand. I picked it up Wednesday and the gears have been just fine since then - thankfully! But no kick stand. I had to go back Saturday but it's really too short. So I'll have to go back another day this coming week so he can put a longer one on. I'll get settled with it all someday very soon, I'm sure of it! It is nice to have, though - I rode into town to shop at Sainsbury's and would not have had enough time to do a shop if I was walking. Plus it's just fun, especially with the lovely weather lately!

Tuesday, 20th Angeline and I went for a run after David got home. Nice we can do that since it's light 'til 6:30. We ran all the way to the Orchard in Grantchester, and back home - just under 6 miles. Wow, I haven't run in 6 years, so have been recovering all week from it! But it was a really great time to chat with her.

Wednesday, 21st, Schaeffer and I went on the Nature Walk with Adelaide's class (since I completely forgot I had signed up for it the week before! So sad!). They've been learning about insects so we kept our eyes open for some - lady bugs (lady birds here) and bees were everywhere! Fun to see creation through the eyes of 16 little 5 year olds!

Thursday, 22nd the interns came over after Life in the Round event, so 7:30 ish. I managed to cook, do homework, feed kids, and get them all ready for bed by the time they got here - success! I made chickpea curry and it was really good!

Oh, that morning Schaeffer and I cycled to the church's Bible Study in a village about 4-5 miles away. I got terribly lost on the way; I took the cycle routes but the directions were confusing and the cycle paths aren't marked. FINALLY figured it out and showed up 1.5 hours late, but still glad we made it and now I know how to get there - and it was a beautiful day to be out! We went two weeks ago by train, but that was also confusing - the train guy i bought the ticket from told me to go to the wrong platform (which of course was on the other side so I had to take the lifts, etc. across the bridge), and by the time I figured it out I had missed the train I needed so had to wait, which made us late. Then coming back, I missed the train by 5 minutes and the next one didn't come for 55 minutes - only every hour. I probably could have walked home, but just sat there with Schaeffer and thankfully it was a nice day. And how often do I get (or take the time) to just sit there with my little boy and look around, up at the sky, the trains going by, the road gate coming down, sing songs, etc.

Saturday, 24th was more cycling - my legs are really sore by now! I probably did about 7 miles though, so not 11-12 like Thursday. Our church had a kids special event this morning, so Adelaide went to that. Schaeffer and I went into town to get the kickstand and had a nice time at Fitzbillies while we waited. It's a really posh cake store in town - a big treat!

David went to London to meet up with 3 former high school students of his from Montgomery. They came to England for their spring break, and got tickets to a Chelsea football game, and invited David to come as well! They're coming up to Cambridge Monday - Thursday, 26-29th. We're looking forward to having them!
