Arrived into Heathrow Airport (London) around 11.30 GMT. Another problem arose at Immigration – David evidently needed to have some kind of Entry form, stating what he was doing as an intern yet not receiving recompense for it. At least the immigration officer was really nice to talk to. 30 minutes later, and his boss let us through using a different code. So NEXT time, we know to get a ticket for babies and check the Embassy for forms/visas! Good news, our baggage was all there in one piece (or 3 pieces) waiting for us! Changed money, called Martin (admin for Christian Heritage, hereafter CH), bought water, bus to other terminal,
bought bus/coach ticket to Cambridge, grabbed a quick sandwich and Diet Cokes, and on to Cambridge. 3 hr. trip, Adelaide so exhausted she slept the entire time!
We read, talked, and enjoyed seeing the English countryside and the little cottage-like homes. Very foggy today (“foggy London town”), probably in 60’s.
Arrived in Cambridge around 5:30, dropped off at a park. Flagged down a taxi, took us to 20 Canterbury Street. Such a cozy street and neighborhood – can’t wait to explore! Couldn’t get in, so knocked on neighbor’s door to call Martin. They were very nice, have a kitten A adored. Got inside – pretty narrow (maybe 16 feet across), 2 stories. Downstairs: hallway, front living room, dining room, hallway to kitchen (heavy fire door to open into kitchen, one step down; must have been an add-on), bathroom behind kitchen, side room leads to patio/garden w/ roses about to bloom! small gate to alley, only for bikes and such. (Trash and cars out front; no front yard; houses all attached, hence the fire door, we guess.) Upstairs: 3 bedrooms. CH situated us with sheets and duvets, a “cot” for Addie (pack’n’play), some essential groceries including fruit puree for A! Also received a welcome basket from Peter, our landlord – champagne, snacks, fruit, even organic gingerbread cookies for A! We like him already! (He’s on vacation this week).
Martin arrived within 10 minutes to meet/greet us; very nice, easy to talk with. Helpful maps and information sheets, keys, etc. Adelaide down to sleep, talked a little more with him, then settled in. Usually Peter lets (rents) to university students so the house has a desk and wardrobe in just about every room, & some random dishes. Evidently he had the house painted last week and a cleaning service to come, but his note said he wasn’t too happy with their work; we agree! I wiped down surfaces & cleaned dishes & unpacked while David went for some dinner (and to check England vs. USA “football match!”). Adelaide ended up waking up about 9:30, so fed her some too; then decided to all go out. Went to Sir Isaac Newton’s (pub) for celebratory “bitters” and taught Addie to give “cheers” with sippy cup!
Walked around, found the Round Church (smaller than anticipated, such a neat medieval building!), headed home around 12, to bed around 1.
